The Carry-On Packing Checklist: Everything You Actually Need

Travel toiletry bag with passport, TSA-size liquids, and grooming essentials laid out

A good carry-on packing checklist does two jobs: it makes sure you don't forget anything important, and it stops you from overpacking "just in case." Use the list below as your default and trim it to the trip. Everything here is meant to fit in a single carry-on plus a personal item.

Clothing (for a 4–7 day trip)

  • 4–5 mix-and-match tops in one color family
  • 2 pairs of bottoms (one worn, one packed)
  • 1 light layer + 1 jacket worn on the plane
  • Underwear and socks, with a plan for a mid-trip sink-wash
  • Sleepwear and one "nice" outfit if needed
  • Comfortable walking shoes worn in transit; one packable spare pair

Soft clothing compresses best inside compression packing cubes, which also keep categories separated so your bag stays organized all week. Keep worn items away from clean ones with a travel laundry bag.

Toiletries (3-1-1 friendly)

  • Travel-size liquids in containers of 3.4 oz / 100 ml or less
  • One clear, quart-size pouch for the security bin
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, skincare basics
  • Any medications in their original packaging
  • A razor, hairbrush, and the two or three tools you actually use

A flat, TSA-ready toiletry bag keeps all of this in one place and hangs on a hotel door, so you're not spreading bottles across the bathroom counter.

Tech and cables

  • Phone, charger, and a power bank
  • Laptop or tablet only if you'll truly use it
  • Earbuds or headphones
  • A universal adapter for international trips

Corral the cords in a cable and tech organizer pouch so you're not untangling a knot of chargers at the gate.

Documents, money, and security

  • Passport and/or ID, plus a backup photo on your phone
  • Boarding passes (digital is fine) and any visas
  • A travel-friendly card and a little local cash
  • Travel insurance details

Keep the essentials hidden and together with an RFID neck wallet and passport sleeve, especially in crowded transit hubs and markets.

The easy-to-forget extras

  • A reusable water bottle (empty through security, fill after)
  • A few zip bags and a foldable tote
  • Basic first-aid: plasters, pain reliever, any personal essentials
  • A luggage scale to check your bag's weight before you leave

One last pass before you zip up

Lay everything out, remove two things you're packing out of fear rather than need, and weigh the bag. If you want a ready-made starting point, the Carry-On Essentials collection covers the organization side of this list. For the full method, see our guide on how to pack a week in a carry-on.
